2/23/10

Hypothesis
If acid rain does affect zooplankton then many zooplankton will die, their life span will get shorter and they will not produce as many offspring.

Materials
- Two 400 mL tanks filled with 350 mL of marine algae medium water (after 3 weeks I will add 15 more mL to each tank
- Rotifers (keratella) * measure container size
- Platymonas (their food) * measure container size
- Microscope (to count the rotifers)
- Sulfuric acid diluted to a ph of 4
- Pipette (to put a certain amount of acid rain into the acid rain tank)

Variables
To grow my rotifer, I am putting them in a tank for a certain amount of time (probably 1-3 weeks) with 900 mL of medium marine water (the water that I supplied in the tank, platymonas, (what I will be feeding them). Then, just for the acid rain tank, I will put in acid rain. I don’t think I have to feed them more than once because after the first time I put the platymonas into the tank, I do not have to do it again because the algae produces more of itself, by itself.


Ms. Minn will be the one producing the acid rain. The acid rain she makes consists of sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide and a ph of around 2.



Procedure
The procedure that I will do will go along the lines of this:
1. Fill two tanks, to start, with medium marine water, a mimic of the water that they live in, in their natural habitat, with the pH of around 7.
2. They will both be filled with rotifer or around the same count of them (if that is possible).
3. Then, I will add a certain amount of “acid rain” into it. I will put the acid rain into one of the tanks every one to two days. I will do this consistently for a certain amount of time until the entire colony of rotifer die, if it affects them in that way while they are in the acid rain tank.

Prediction
My prediction is that the colony of rotifer, without the acid rain, will produce very well, and at the end of my project, will have many more rotifer in it than the other one. But on the other hand, the acid rain tank will not produce well at all. I think their food will die, so they will have no food supply. If they have no food supply, they will not be able to survive. So I am saying that they will not be very successful, and fail to live for more than 3 weeks.

getting data.

Every day, before I put the acid in the acid tank, I will take samples of how many rotifer there are per mL. Then, I will multiply it by 550. I will do this to both tanks.

I haven't done this yet because we had a double snow day, leading into a six day weekend, therefore, I did not take samples today. I will take them everyday for now and on.

• Rotifer can be found in most freshwater (lake bottoms, rivers, or streams) enviornments and some soil.
• They are small in size and have soft bodies.
• The body of rotifer consists of four basic regions, head neck body and feet.
• The head carries a corona of cilia that helps the water get into the mouth.

• Because they are so small people have not really heard about there exsistance.
• They have less then 1000 cells
• They get around using the corona (crown of the cilia)

o acid rain water has less than 6 and even can go down to the 4’s on the north eastern side of America (although the north eastern side of America does have one of the lowest pH levels in America, but they do not cause it. intern application (take 2)

My experimental study seeks to find the effect of acid rain on zooplankton. The independent variable I will be studying is acid rain. Numerous things cause acid rain, for example, gases from factories, cars, planes and many more things produce acid rain. These gases are carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, chlorofluorocarbons, hazardous air pollutants, lead, nitrogen oxides, ozone, particulate matter, sulfur dioxides and volatile organic compounds. The jet stream carries these toxic gases throughout our atmosphere and is then caught into clouds. The gases then dissolve into rainwater to form acid rain. Later when it rains local bodies of water have a major affect on the earth. These affects include the following disintegrating trees, poisoning water and much more. In result of acid rain many organisms living in environments that are being affected by acid rain can get poisoned, which may lead to death.
Plankton and other forms of small organisms and plants, such as algae are the foundation of every food chain. It is necessary to keep this plant safe. For organisms that depend on zooplankton to live, there will be some problems due to the increases in pollution, which results in acid rain. The oceans food chain goes like this: phyto plankton at the bottom, then zoo plankton, then fish larvae, then smaller fish, then larger predators. All of those animals (other than the phyto plankton) eat the zooplankton. So this means if the acid rain poisons the zooplankton, most of the animals in the sea but be terribly endangered.

Recap

I haven't posted yet so this is my first post...

I have met with Ms. Weissman twice so far they were:

1. what my topic should be

2. how to take up some more space, or get more words, for question B of the Intern Application. It helped me a lot because it contains more than half of the words for B.

3. the first part of my question B was completely wrong. That was the answer for another question. I was rejected so i just have to do that over and then I will be accepted. I can keep the same topic.
